Happy Hour and Oysters

Everyone down here in Key West is definitely on “island time”. You can see this everywhere you go, from the bars to the local stores. Nobody is in a rush to do anything. It is one of those places where you wonder, “what day is today?” :)

Everywhere you go on the island restaurants offer a nice happy hour special. Yesterday we celebrated happy hour at Alonzo‘s Oyster Bar, a waterfront restaurant with dock side tables that has an amazing happy hour from 4 to 7. All drinks are half price and their happy hour menu is extensive. We ordered a sampler platter of oysters and clams that included spinach parmesan oysters, key lime garlic oysters and andouille sausage clam casinos.

I also had a cup of their delicious white clam chili. It was bursting with juicy clams, white beans and red potatoes topped with crunchy tortilla strips. It was incredible and one that I have to recreate when I get home.

After happy hour we were both craving a big slice of key lime pie. We were told that Kermit’s Key West Key Lime Shoppe was the best place on the island to go. Just one bite and I was in heaven! A sweet graham cracker crust topped with a creamy and tangy key lime filling and a dollop of fluffy whipped cream…does it get any better? For those of you that just can’t get enough of that key lime flavor they have so many different products to choose from. Chocolate dipped key lime pie on a stick, key lime taffy, key lime cookies, key lime barbecue sauce, key lime salsa and the list goes on and on.

Early in the morning Andrew and I took the Conch Tour Train around Old Town and learned so much about Key West. We passed many local landmarks and listened as the train conductor told us about everything we passed. We learned about the infamous Key West saloon, Sloppy Joe’s Bar that has been a Key West landmark since 1933. This was a favorite spot of Ernest Hemingway while he lived in Key West and you can see many photos of him and the owner Joe Russell scattered all over the walls.

We have spent the past four days in Key West and thoroughly enjoyed it! If you have never been to Key West I definitely recommend going! 😀 We are headed back up to Miami this afternoon to spend the next 3 days before we head off to the next stop on our vacation, Boston. :)
