Happy 3rd birthday to my toy poodle, Winston! I can’t believe that he is already three years old. It seems like yesterday that he came into our lives when Andrew surprised me with this little furball of love for my birthday. He was so tiny when we first brought him home…only a whooping 1.7 pounds at 11 weeks old. He is still very small, only tipping the scales at 4 pounds!
Winston is the sweetest, most lovable dog you will ever meet. He loves long walks, chewing on pig ears, snuggling on laps, and playing with our Yorkshire Terrier Hemingway.
“My Boys” love when I make homemade treats. Somehow they always know when I am making something for them. They circle around my feet in the kitchen and nudge the back of my leg with their noses while I cook!
With all of the pumpkin recipes that I have been making lately, I didn’t want the dogs to miss out on the pumpkin extravaganza! As soon as I laid my eyes on this recipe I knew that my dogs would love it…it contained peanut butter! I am very strict about what I feed my dogs. They eat Blue Buffalo Fish and Brown Rice as their main food, however, if given the chance they would eat treats all day long. I make sure that all the treats I give them are made here in the United States (after the whole treats from China scare) and contain no sugar. They have never been fed “human food” so even if something falls on the floor while I am cooking they leave it alone. They’re so good!
Hemingway and Winston went crazy for these little treats! I used a small dog bone cookie cutter and it made a ton of homemade treats. You can make them as big or as small as you like and even save time by cutting the dough with a knife instead of a cookie cutter. But I swear they have to taste better when cut into small little bones! 😀
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes
2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 large eggs
1 cup canned pumpkin
3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In small bowl, whisk together the flour, oats, salt, and cinnamon; set aside.
In a separate large bowl, whisk together the eggs, pumpkin and peanut butter until combined. Using a rubber spatula mix in the flour mixture until combined.
Transfer to a lightly floured work surface and roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick rectangle. Cut mixture using a canine-themed cookie cutter and place on a prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes. Remove to cooling racks and let cool thoroughly, about 2 hours. They will harden as they cool.
