Happy 4th birthday to my Yorkshire Terrier, Hemingway!  I can’t believe that he’s already four years old! It seems like yesterday Andrew surprised me with this little yorkie for our first wedding anniversary in June 2009. We named him Hemingway after the name of our wedding reception site in Grand Cayman.

Every year for Winston and Hemingway’s birthdays I make some special homemade treats for them. Somehow “My Boys” always know when I am making something special just for them. They circle around my feet as I cook and nudge the back of my leg with their noses!

I guess you could say that my dogs are super spoiled, but I’m ok with that! ;) They love going on long hikes with us, playing fetch, basking in the sun and chasing birds in the backyard.

Hemingway and Winston went crazy for these little treats! I made them extra special by using a small dog bone cookie cutter.  You can make them as big or as small as you like and even save time by cutting the dough with a knife or pizza wheel instead of a cookie cutter.

Flax Seed Dog Biscuits

Yield: varies depending on size of cookie cutter

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 40 minutes

Total Time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

12 oz (340g) whole wheat flour
12oz (340g) bread flour
2 oz (55g) wheat germ
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons brown sugar
4 tablespoons Flax Seed
3 large eggs
1 cup vegetable oil
3oz (85g) powdered dry milk
1c water

Directions:

In large bowl, whisk together the wheat flour, bread flour, wheat germ, salt, brown sugar, and flax seed; set aside.
In a separate medium bowl, dissolve the dry milk in water. Whisk in eggs and vegetable oil. Using a rubber spatula, mix into the flour mixture until combined. Cover the dough and set aside to relax for 15-20 min.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
Transfer to a work surface and roll the dough into a 1/2-inch-thick rectangle. Cut mixture using a canine-themed cookie cutter and place on a prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until biscuits are brown and rock-hard. Remove to cooling racks and allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
