There's something about a Krispy Kreme doughnut that just makes us happy. Maybe it's the sweet, crispy exterior or the fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth interior. Whatever the reason, we just can't get enough of these delicious treats!
Ingredients
1C.Boiling water
3Tbsp.+ 1 tsp. Granulated sugar divided
1Package of dry active yeast
3Tbsp.Milk
2 ¾ - 3 ½C.All purpose flour
1Large egg
2Tbsp.Melted butter
Oil for cooking
Glaze ingredients:
4Tbsp.Hot water
2C.Powdered sugar
2tsp.Vanilla extract
⅓C.Melted butter
Instructions
Place the boiling water, 1 tsp. Sugar, yeast and milk into a bowl, stir and allow to sit for 10 minutes untouched.
In a separate bowl, combine the melted butter, 2 ¾ cup of the flour and the remaining sugar.
Add the egg and the yeast mixture to the flour mixture, and blend until a dough has formed.
Add more flour as needed to the mixture until the dough pulls away from the spatula with ease. The dough should still be tacky to the touch at this point.
Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, adding a bit of flour as needed until the dough is not tacky anymore.
Put the dough into a bowl that has been greased, and cover. Allow the dough to rise in a warm area for an hour.
Make four even sections with the dough, and roll each section into a log shape on a floured surface. Each log of dough should be no more than 2 inches wide.
Cut each log of dough into 15 pieces and roll them into balls.
Place several inches of oil into a deep sided skillet and bring to 350 degrees.
Cook the balls of dough for a few minutes in the oil until golden brown.
Drain on a paper towel lined plate.
Combine the ingredients for the glaze until smooth.
Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and allow to sit for several minutes before you serve.
