Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

  • Yellow Cake Mix: Store-bought mix is honestly not good enough for this dish, and our favorite moist chocolate bundt cake ideas include this: making homemade cake mix by stirring together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, milk, eggs, and butter. It adds even more flavor to your chocolate bundt cake recipe.
  • Instant Puddings: Your easy chocolate bundt cake from scratch can use instant pudding if you want. More great moist chocolate bundt cake ideas include making substitutions for vanilla and chocolate instant puddings by adding cornstarch, sugar, and vanilla (or chocolate) into a bowl.
  • Sour Cream: Making your homemade chocolate bundt cake dessert requires sour cream to add a denser flavor. However, you can make this a truly old fashioned chocolate bundt cake recipe when baking chocolate bundt cake at home by using Greek yogurt or cottage cheese instead.
  • Chocolate Chips: No chocolate bundt cake with frosting is complete without a chocolate chip topping! What if you want something a bit more diverse? Butterscotch chips or adding chopped walnuts would be absolutely amazing! You could also add in cherries or raisins.

How to Make It

To start with this chocolate bundt cake recipe, I like to add some hot fudge in the center of the cake, kind of like a molten lava cake. I also make a simple ganache and drizzle it over the top of the homemade chocolate bundt cake dessert.

Then, I top my chocolate bundt cake with frosting, milk chocolate chips, and white chocolate chips. A chocolate bundt cake with frosting is a great meal that your family will love!

Adding the yellow cake mix, instant vanilla pudding, and instant chocolate pudding.

Adding the sour cream.

Adding the eggs.

Adding the oil.

Let’s get a little more granular with this old fashioned chocolate bundt cake recipe, though. Start by preheating the oven to 350 degrees. In a mixing bowl, combine all the ingredients except the chocolate chips, mixing until well combined.

When baking chocolate bundt cake at home, keep a bundt pan around! If you don’t have one, go buy it from a store. Of all the experimental moist chocolate bundt cake ideas to try, baking without a bundt pan isn’t a good one.

Once you have a bundt pan, pour the batter in and smooth it out. Then, sprinkle the chocolate chips on top of the batter, pressing down slightly. Remember: you can make easy chocolate bundt cake from scratch by making your mix entirely on your own!

Now, bake for 50 minutes or until cooked through, let it cool, flip it over onto a plate, and serve. This isn’t a particularly hard cake to make, so enjoy yourself a little!

Tips for Success

  • Keep all your ingredients at room temperature before mixing to ensure a smooth blend
  • Grease and flour the bundt pan before cooking to avoid any sticking
  • Use the toothpick method to check for moistness in your cake
  • Check the cake a few times throughout its baking time to get good results
  • Add a little more chocolate if you want a truly creamy cake

Storage & Reheating

This chocolate bundt cake recipe could sit on the counter for two days as long as it is covered tightly. However, I enjoy this homemade chocolate bundt cake dessert more when it is chilled.

I place this chocolate bundt cake with frosting in an airtight cake carrier and into the refrigerator. After baking chocolate bundt cake at home, you can store it in the refrigerator for five days.

Even better, this easy chocolate bundt cake from scratch can be frozen. Be sure to wrap the dish you made with our old fashioned chocolate bundt cake recipe with plastic wrap and foil to prevent ice crystals.

You can store the cake in the freezer for two months before thawing by leaving in the fridge overnight.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve this cake with a dusting of powdered sugar to give it a little nicer flavor
  • Add some chocolate panache to produce an even richer palate
  • A scoop of ice cream goes perfectly with a slice of bundt cake
  • Top it with berries for a healthier version of this dessert
  • Whipped cream makes this an even more luscious cake

Notes

The first time I ate this cake was at my tenth birthday party. My mom was the kind of woman who would balk at making an easy chocolate bundt cake from scratch when she could make a tougher one instead!

However, this chocolate bundt cake recipe really appealed to her, and it became our homemade chocolate bundt cake dessert of choice.

I think she loved this old fashioned chocolate bundt cake recipe because it reminded her of her mother. That’s definitely why I enjoy it! I hope you will, too!
