The last time we went to a dinner party at one of our dear friends’ home, we knew that one of them was super picky.
I was in the mood for a challenge, so it was my mission to make something that they would like!
So I headed into the kitchen and got to work making this New York cake. When we showed up at their house, I was eagerly waiting for dessert. They both took one bite and moaned because it was so good. Challenge was accepted and complete!

Overall the ingredients for this New York super fudge chunk cake are pretty easy to work with. There are three different portions of the cake. The actual cake, chocolate ganache, and vanilla frosting. Each one has it’s a role in this incredible New York cake. Let’s take a look at what you will be needing.
- 2 box triple chocolate cake mix
- 6 eggs
- 2 1/2 C water
- 1 C Canola oil
- 1 C chopped Walnuts
- 1 9×13 baking pan
- Pam baking spray
Chocolate Ganache
- 2 C Semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 C Heavy whipping cream
- 1 mini angled spatula
- 1 squeeze bottle
Vanilla frosting
- 1 C unsalted butter, softened
- 2 ½ C powdered sugar
- 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 3-5 tbsp Heavy whipping cream
- 1 C chopped Pecans
- 1 C Mini chocolate chips
How to Make New York Style Cake
I can’t wait for you to make your first New York-style cake so you can bite into it. I know that you are going to love all the sweet goodness and the texture of the cake. Take a look at these easy to follow step by step directions to make a New York cake.
Step 1: Heat up the oven to 350 degrees F. Then spray the baking dish with the nonstick baking spray and set aside.
Step 2: Take a standing mixer or hand mixer and beat together the cake mix, eggs, oil, and water until combined.
Step 3: Gently, fold in the chopped walnuts.
Step 4: Pour the cake batter into the baking dish and bake in the oven for about 25-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Step 5: Allow the New York cake to cool completely.
How to Make Chocolate Ganache
Step 1: While the cake is cooling, place the chocolate chips into a heat-safe bowl.
Step 2: Using a small pot, heat up the heavy whipping cream over the stove until it starts to slow simmer.
Step 3: Pour the heavy whipping cream over the chocolate chips and allow to sit for 1 minute.
Step 4: Take a whisk and whisk the ganache until smooth and creamy.
Step 5: Scoop ½ C of the ganache into the squeeze bottle.
Directions to top the cake
Step 1: If you notice that the cake baked a dome on top of the middle of the cake, remove it with a serrated knife to make the sheet cake even.
Step 2: Pour the ganache over the cake and smooth evenly with the angled spatula.
Step 3: Place the cake into the fridge and allow it to harden for 15-20 minutes.
Vanilla frosting Directions
Step 1: Using a standing mixer, cream together the butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and heavy whipping cream until combined, smooth and stiff with peaks.
Step 2: Scoop the frosting onto the top of the cake and smooth evenly.
Step 3: Using the ganache in the bottle, drizzle all over the top of the cake.
Step 4: Sprinkle the chopped pecans and mini chocolate chips on top.
