Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
Add-ins: You might like to add some chopped pecans or walnuts to the topping for some crunch, or perhaps sprinkle over some chocolate chips instead. Add-ins such as raisins or dried cranberries are great in the batter, and you can even add some cream cheese frosting in between the layers of cinnamon rolls.
Granulated, brown, and powdered sugar: To make this a low-carb dessert, you can swap the traditional granulated, brown, and powdered sugar using alternatives. Common alternative sugars include stevia and monk fruit. Swerve also makes different blends and provides zero-calorie sugars for those who are watching their sugar intake.
All-purpose flour: All-purpose flour is a classic ingredient in cinnamon roll coffee cakes. If you’re gluten-intolerant, however, opt for a mixture of almond and coconut flavor so the mixture is not too dense. Coconut flour is a bit lighter, and can be split with the almond flour for a similar airy texture as traditional AP, or all-purpose, flour.
Vanilla extract: You can swap traditional vanilla extract with imitation vanilla extract. This helps keep this recipe budget-friendly.
