Easy Orange Apple Spice Cake Recipe
I love apple desserts in the fall. Well, actually I like it all year round. When making this Orange Apple Spice Cake recipe, you are starting with a cake mix and adding fresh apples. The cake mix makes this easy to make and the fresh apples give this cake a fabulous taste. The apples and the orange makes a fantastic combination.
This apple cake is perfect for enjoying during the fall, making for a bake sale, a picnic and pot luck or just because you are craving the taste of apples, oranges, and spice. Make this cake ahead or make it when the craving hits. Perfect all year round, this cake is perfect for dessert or enjoying with a nice cup of coffee.
What are the best apples for a fresh apple cake?
When making this fresh apple cake you want to use apples that are good for baking. My favorite apples for baking are granny smith or gala apples. Granny Smith Apple give the fresh apple cake a tart apple flavor and gala apples are sweet.
What if I can’t find an orange cake mix?
When making this cake, you are using half a box of spice cake and a half a box of orange cake. If you have trouble finding the orange cake mix, you can use the whole spice cake and cut the buttermilk measurement in half. For the other portion of buttermilk, replace it with orange juice. Another option is to use the whole box of spice and add orange extract to the batter. You can play with the amount of orange you like in this.
How to Store Moist Apple Cake
When you make this moist apple cake, you will want to make sure the cake is covered. When the cake is exposed to the air, it will go stale faster. The moist apple cake can be set on the counter or stored in the refrigerator. If you live in a warm climate, the cake will do best in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve the cake, take it out of the refrigerator about an hour before serving.
How Long Does Fresh Apple Cake Last
When you store the cake at room temperature, the cake will last about 3 days. If the cake is stored in the refrigerator, it will last about 5 days. You can move the cake to the freezer to make it last up to 3 months. When freezing the cake, I like to slice the cake into individual slices. This lets me take a slice of cake out at a time and not have to worry about the rest of the cake spoiling before it gets eaten. Be sure to wrap the cake in plastic wrap and then place it in a freezer bag. This keeps the cake from getting freezer burned.
If you want to keep the frosting from sticking to the plastic, you can freeze the cake on a baking sheet or plate. Once the cake and frosting has frozen, you can move it to the plastic wrap and freezer bag. When thawing the cake out, remove the plastic wrap first so the frosting does not stick to it.

I made this cake twice! OMG it is so good and so moist! I couldn’t get the orange cake mix so I used the whole spice mix, added orange extract and omitted allspice so it wouldn’t be too spicy. Delish! I also added a thin layer of emulsified orange marmalade between cake and frosting. Yummy! Candied orange peel sprinkled on top. Adding this to my recipe book! Over the moon about it!
