Tips for making Tomato Jam

  • Bring the mixture to a solid boil before turning down the heat. This will help the jam thicken as it cools.

  • For a more concentrated flavour, simmer the jam for longer over low heat, just make sure you don’t burn it!

Tomato Jam FAQs

Does tomato jam need pectin?

Tomato jam does not need pectin to thicken unlike other jams. Tomatoes contain a natural pectin that will help thicken your tomato jam.

Why is my tomato jam not thickening?

If your tomato jam won’t thicken, you may need to add additional sugar to the recipe in order for it to thicken to your liking. Make sure you get the jam boiling or the sugar will not become thick enough for jam.

What are the best varieties of tomatoes to use for this jam recipe?

Any variety of tomato can work for jam. It’s best to stick to what are commonly referred to as “eating” or “canning varieties” as they will have the best flavor and texture for tomato jam. Roma, grape, and heirloom varieties work very well for jam.
