Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Fudge brownie mix and chocolate cake mix: It’s highly recommended to use a pre-made fudge brownie and chocolate cake mix. However, if you want to make this chocolate brownie cake with frosting from scratch, you may want to check out another from-scratch recipe, or try our Tuxedo cake!

Heavy whipping cream: Heavy whipping cream makes this brownie cake decadent. If you do not have heavy whipping cream, you can substitute it for whole milk. Keep in mind, doing so may change the texture of the cake slightly. The heavy cream adds a richness that simply cannot be beat when baking chocolate brownie cake at home.

Semi-sweet chocolate chips: Swap the semi-sweet chocolate chips for milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips. If you want a chocolate chip that’s lower in sugar and carbohydrates, try a brand such as Lily’s!

Optional pecans for topping: Adding chopped pecans is optional. If you prefer almond slivers or even chopped shelled pistachios or walnuts, you can do this as well.

How to Make It

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Prepare your ingredients while your oven is preheating to save time.

Step 2. Add the ingredients for the cake into a mixing bowl. Mix and blend on high until smooth and creamy. If you don’t have an electric mixer, you can use your hands–though this may require a bit of strength and some extra time.
