How do you know when a cabbage casserole is done cooking?
The cabbage will be soft and easy to cut through. If it’s still tough, then it needs to cook a little longer.

Yes, as long as you bake it first. The cabbage needs to be cooked and softened before you freeze it. If you freeze fresh cabbage before cooking, it will have a strange texture and won’t be appetizing if you try to heat it up.
How can the flavor of a cabbage casserole be enhanced?
Feel free to add any of the following ingredients to the casserole:
- Chopped celery

Mix in any of your favorite veggies that you like celery, carrots, mushrooms, and corn are good ideas.
Can a cabbage casserole be made in a slow cooker?
Yep! Brown the turkey and cook the onions. Mix in the rest of the sauce ingredients. Add layers of sauce and cabbage to the slow cooker. Cook on low for 4-6 hours. Add cheese during the last 30 minutes.
Is there a vegetarian option for a cabbage casserole?
You can leave out the ground turkey to make it vegetarian. You can also swap the turkey for some veggies like carrots, celery, or mushrooms.
Can a cabbage casserole be made ahead of time?
Yes, you can make it in advance and refrigerate it until you are ready to heat and serve. It will last in the fridge up to 1 day in advance.
Perfect recipe for my diet! I’m trying to use a lot less pasta and bread carbs. Cabbage is an excellent substitute.
