Tips for Perfect Grilled Baked Potatoes

  • Always make sure the grill is preheated before adding the potatoes to make sure they cook evenly. The perfect temperature for cooking grilled baked potatoes is 350°F.
  • Pre-cooking the potatoes in the microwave will soften the inside leading to a fluffy soft center on the grill.
  • Use the prick test with a fork or a knife to test when your potatoes are done grilling. There should be little resistance and the fork should slide in easily.
  • Make sure you wrap the potatoes in foil before placing them on the grill. This lets the potato cook properly without burning the skin.
  • Potatoes need a lot of seasoning and the salt coating in this recipe may seem generous but it’s an important step to ensuring great-tasting potatoes.
  • Avoid opening the lid of the BBQ as much as possible when baking potatoes to keep the heat in.

Best Way to Store BBQ Baked Potatoes

Leftover grilled baked potatoes need to be refrigerated to keep them fresh. Store leftovers in an airtight container and use them within 5 days.

To reheat baked potatoes, heat the oven or BBQ to 350°F. Wrap the potatoes in aluminum foil and place directly on the rack or grill. Heat for 15-20 minutes until heated through. Insert a knife into the potato to make sure it’s warmed through.

Freezing Instructions

Baked potatoes can be frozen for later use if you take precautions to store them properly. Make sure the potatoes are individually wrapped in foil and place the wrapped potatoes in a large resealable freezer bag. Frozen baked potatoes can stay frozen for up to 1 month.

Thaw frozen baked potatoes in the fridge overnight or by removing the foil and heating them in the microwave on low heat for 60 second intervals until thawed.
