Is Funnel Cake Made From Pancake Batter?
Our funnel cake recipe is a made-from-scratch recipe. There are many variations on at-home funnel cake recipes, though, and some of them do indeed use pancake batter.
Is Funnel Cake The Same As Fried Dough?
Funnel cake is similar to fried dough recipes, but there are some differences. The main difference is in the initial recipe that is being used. Another important difference is the way that the batter is drizzled into the hot oil to create the signature funnel cake design.
Why Is My Funnel Cake Not Crispy?
One of the problems that cooks often complain about when making funnel cake at home, is that they cannot quite get that same crispiness as you might get at the carnival. The trick is to make sure that your oil is at the right temperature before you ever drizzle in the batter.
Should Funnel Cake Batter Be Thick?
Funnel cake batter is pretty thick. You will need a nice thick funnel batter in order to keep a good shape while the batter is in the hot grease.
How To Serve Funnel Cake?
Funnel cake should be served hot. Once the cake starts to cool off it can be mushy or greasy. For best results serve your funnel cakes directly out of the hot grease and topped with powdered sugar, strawberries, whip cream, or chocolate syrup.
Cooking Tips:
Keep your oil consistently hot during the entire cooking process and do not start drizzling in the batter until the oil is at the right temp. To ensure consistent cooking temps, you might want to use a deep fryer that has temp controls.
Variations:
Funnel cake can be made with a few variations, especially when it comes to toppings. You can use powdered sugar, fruit, whip cream, chocolate syrup, caramel syrup, or anything really that you want on top.
Ingredients:
- Milk
- Egg
- Water
- Vanilla extract
- Granulated sugar
- Baking powder
- Salt
- All-purpose flour
- Powdered sugar
How to make Funnel cake:
Step 1. Choose a bowl that has a spout to pour the mixture easily and add the milk, the egg, the vanilla, and the water. Mix until well combined.
Step 2. Add the sugar one tablespoon at a time, along with the salt and baking powder. Mix until everything is integrated.
Step 3. Add the flour gradually, and beat until you get a smooth and homogeneous mixture. Let rest.
Step 4. Heat a cup of oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Let heat until hot. Put a wooden spoon into the oil, and if it starts to bubble around it, it is because it is at the right temperature. Reduce to medium-low heat.
Step 5. Pour the mixture in a very fine, thin line, rotating on all sides of the pan. You can make the form you want the most. Cook for two minutes or until lightly browned. Flip over and let it cook on the other side.
Step 6. Remove from the oil and place on a napkin to absorb the excess oil. Decorate with powdered sugar and enjoy!
