Popcorn Shrimp Variations

The best way to add variety to this recipe is by adding spices, ingredients, or seasoning to the coating.

Extra crunchy popcorn shrimp – add crushed cornflakes, potato chips, or crackers to the breadcrumb before breading. They will fry up extra crispy!

Spicy popcorn shrimp – Add cayenne, chipotle, or ancho chili powder to the breading before coating. This will add a nice kick of heat to the shrimp.

Coconut popcorn shrimp –  Replacing the breadcrumb with unsweetened coconut flakes will not only reduce the carbs but will add incredible crunch and flavor to this recipe.

Serve with dipping sauce – These popcorn shrimp are wonderful with chipotle mayo, honey mustard, cocktail sauce, or marinara for dipping.

Popcorn Shrimp Pro Tips

  • Allow the oil to heat up completely before adding the shrimp. If the oil is too cold the breading will soak up the oil and the shrimp will be soggy.
  • Use an oil thermometer if you aren’t sure of the oil temperature.
  • Place cooked shrimp on a paper towel-lined plate or wire cooling rack to drain the oil.
  • Using a slotted spoon makes removing the shrimp from the oil easy.
  • Hit the shrimp with some extra salt right as they come out of the fryer.
