Hearty, tasty, and a favorite any time of the day!

Biscuits and Gravy with Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole

This casserole is SO GOOD and family-approved!

Biscuits and Gravy with Sausage and Egg Breakfast Casserole

Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 20-25 minutes | Servings: 8

Ingredients:

8 ct. Tube of refrigerated biscuits

1 lb. Ground breakfast sausage

2 Packs of country gravy mix

1 Can of evaporated milk

12 large eggs

Salt and pepper to taste

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions:

Breakfast sausage: If you’re not a fan of traditional breakfast sausage, consider using bacon as an alternative. Ground turkey may also work (as it does in this turkey zucchini casserole), though there will be less grease to help with making a creamy gravy.

Refrigerated biscuits: If you’re feeling extra creative, consider making homemade cheesy biscuits from scratch. Placing them in the refrigerator to cool down before using them in your casserole will help keep them together once they’re in the oven.

Salt and pepper: If salt and pepper alone sound bland, you can spice up this dish with a bit of smoked paprika. For garlic lovers, using garlic powder or garlic salt may help give it the zesty taste you’re craving. Adding onion powder is ideal for those who just love adding onions to every dish they make!

Country gravy mix: You can forego these packets if you’re making the gravy with sausage and/or bacon from scratch. Using these packs pairs well with alternatives, such as ground turkey, due to less grease.

Instructions:

Step 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Preheating the oven will provide ample time for you to start preparing your ground sausage. By the time your oven is ready, your ingredients will be done.

Step 2. Brown the sausage in a skillet until completely cooked through.

Drain excess grease to keep this healthy biscuits and gravy with sausage and egg breakfast casserole version from becoming too layered with unnecessary fat.

Using ground turkey is another option to consider if you want to reduce the amount of grease your cooked produces.

Browning your sausage on a medium-high heat also helps add to the flavor of the casserole, once cooked.

Step 3. Reduce the heat to medium and sprinkle the gravy mix over the meat along with a cup of evaporated milk and a cup of water. Mix, and sauté until thickened.

It’s important to reduce the heat during this step to avoid overcooking your sausage while allowing for the gravy mix to fully incorporate with your sausage or turkey.

Step 4. In a bowl, mix together the eggs and 5 oz. of the evaporated milk along with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 5. Scramble the eggs lightly in a skillet over medium heat.

Be sure not to scramble your eggs on high heat, as this may cause them to burn. Cooking your eggs at a medium heat will allow them to cook to perfection before adding them to your casserole dish.

Step 6. Layer ⅓ of the meat and gravy in the bottom of a well-greased 9×13 baking dish and top with half of the eggs.

b.

Step 7. Add another layer of gravy mix, eggs and then top with the remaining gravy mixture.

Step 8. Place the biscuits on top of the casserole and bake for 20-25 minutes until the biscuits are cooked through.

This casserole is absolutely comforting and delicious!

Tips for Success:

-Grease your casserole dish in advance to prevent sticking, especially after storing your casserole

-Always drain excess grease after cooking sausage for a healthier casserole.

-Allow your casserole to sit for 10-15 minutes before serving, so your ingredients cool enough as the flavors meld together.

Storage and Reheating:

Store leftovers in a casserole dish with an airtight lid or in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Reheating your casserole is easy if you’re storing it directly in your casserole dish. Simply cover the amount of casserole you intend to cook with foil and reheat in a warm oven at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes.

You can also microwave individual portions in the microwave. If you want to freeze your casserole, you can do so safely for up to 2 months.

Serving Suggestions:

Pair this easy biscuits and gravy with sausage and egg breakfast casserole for beginners with a side of hash browns or fresh fruit, which is perfect for breakfast or brunch.

If you’re a lover of spicy foods, consider adding a dollop of hot sauce to your casserole once it’s ready to be eaten! If you love a bit of sweetness with your traditional biscuits and gravy, top your biscuits with a side of fresh homemade jam. This dish is a crowd-pleaser, whether you’re preparing for game day, Christmas, or another holiday gathering.
