What Do I Love About French Onion Skillet Chicken?
This dish is full of deliciousness in every bite. The crispy chicken is smothered with a creamy, oniony sauce that’s loaded with rich onion flavor. Plus, I can make this dish with just a few simple ingredients in one skillet!
It’s a great recipe to put on the table when I have a few people over for dinner, but also simple enough for a weeknight family meal.
What Alterations Can I Make?
Umm, there are some ways you can tweak the recipe.
- Use a different type of onion. Reds have a milder taste, while yellow or white onions have a sharper flavor.
- Replace thyme and sage with a bit of Italian seasoning.
- Add some vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers, or zucchini to jazz it up.
- Change up the cheese from Swiss to something like Gruyere or Gouda.
- To make this a vegetarian dish, use seitan instead of chicken and vegetable broth.
Can I Skip Caramelizing the Onions?
Oh, no, no, no! Please don’t. That’s the key to the ultimate flavor of this dish! Sweating the onions softens them up and brings out their natural sweetness.
I know it takes some time, but caramelized onions really make the sauce shine.
What to Serve with French Onion Chicken?
You can let it go and conquer the dinner table without any sides. But a side of rice, mashed potatoes, or even some crusty bread will jazz up the bird. We’ve also tried roasted radishes! Was it a night?
