They are really pretty simple to make, and whenever someone tries them, they are sure to fall head over heels in love. Every bite is filled with crunchy cookies, creamy peanut butter, and lots of chocolate. You can literally make them for any occasion imaginable, and they are loved and appreciated.

Homemade Tagalongs Cookies Recipe

I just love a good Girl Scout Cookie, but since the season is so short, I am always looking for recipes to recreate my favorite cookies in my own kitchen. It is hard to choose a favorite Girl Scout cookie, but if I had to narrow it down, it would be Samoas, followed by thin mints, then Tagalongs. Since I have already found a tremendous Samoas cookie, I went on the search for a Tagalong, or Peanut Butter Pattie, recipe. After only a two-second search on Pinterest, I found one! Buttery shortbread topped with a peanut butter filling and covered with a layer of chocolate glaze. This is a Tagalong on steroids! Just look at that gooey peanut butter filling, you won’t find that much peanut butter in a regular Tagalong! 🙂

Honestly, you are never too old to eat some good old-fashioned Tagalong cookies, am I right? Make a double batch and give them to your friends or send them to a teacher as a gift. They are just too amazing not to share with others.

Are Tagalongs and Peanut Butter Patties The Same Thing?

Yes, they are essentially the same thing. The difference is that there are two bakeries that prepare these cookies, and due to not being able to use the same name, they had to adjust what they are called. Plus, each bakery makes them a little bit different. It really doesn’t matter what you call them because they both taste amazing!

What is the Tagalong Filling Made From?

For these delicious Tagalong cookies, the filling is made out of delicious peanut butter, powdered sugar, vanilla, and a little bit of salt. They are so similar to the real thing you are going to want to devour every bite! Honestly, it’s hard to limit how many cookies I eat because they are addictive.

How do You Dip Cookies in Chocolate?

There are several methods out there for dipping cookies in chocolate. I find that the easiest method is making sure that the cookies are chilled before beginning. This makes them so much easier to work with, and you can coat them without less fuss. Use a fork to place the cookie into the melted chocolate mixture. Then pick up the cookie with the fork and lightly tap it on the side of the bowl. Set the cookie on parchment paper and enjoy once it sets up! It’s truly pretty simple, and it may take a couple of tries to get it, so they look pretty, but don’t give up. You will get there with some practice.

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk

For the Filling:

  • 1 1/2 cups creamy peanut butter
  • 3/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • generous pinch salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Chocolate Coating:

  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon shortening

How to Make Homemade Tagalongs Cookies

First Step: Warm up the oven to 350 degrees F. Then line 2 baking sheets with pieces of parchment paper.

Second Step: Combine together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl with a whisk then set aside.

Third Step: In a bowl of your stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Mix in flour mixture followed by the vanilla and milk.

Fourth Step: Begin by rolling a heaping tablespoon of dough into a 1½-inch ball and place it on the prepared baking sheet. Continue this process and repeat with the remaining dough, spacing the balls about 1 inch apart. You’ll need to use your thumb, dowel, or a melon baller, make an indentation in the center of each cookie.

Fifth Step: Bake the cookies for 11-13 minutes, or until edges are golden brown. Remove the cookie sheets from the oven. Using your thumb, dowel, or a melon baller, press into the cookies again. Cool cookies for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Sixth Step: To make the filling, use a medium bowl. Combine the peanut butter, confectioners’ sugar, salt, and vanilla. Place in freezer for 10 minutes, or until slightly firm. Next, start rolling a heaping teaspoon of cookie filling into a ball and place it in the middle of the indented part of the cookie, pressing down so that it sticks. Place cookies in the refrigerator for 20 minutes, or until firm.

Seventh Step: Next, you’ll want to start making the chocolate coating.  Melt the shortening and chocolate together in a metal bowl. You need to place it over a pan of lightly simmering water. Stir occasionally until smooth, and remove from heat. Dip chilled cookies into the melted chocolate, let excess drip off, and then place on a sheet of parchment paper. Refrigerate the cookies for 30 minutes to set then serve.
