Safest Way to Store Hard Boiled Eggs

If you are cooking in large batches and planning to store hard boiled eggs you must keep them in the refrigerator. You should not leave them out at room temperature for longer than 1-2 hours.

Peeled hard boiled eggs

Peeled eggs can be stored in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Cover the bottom of the container with a moist paper towel and help keep the eggs from drying out.

Unpeeled Hard boiled eggs

Unpeeled hard boiled eggs will stay moist and fresh compared to peeled eggs. Store in a sealed container for up to 1 week and peel before using. Leaving the eggs unpeeled is the best way to store hard boiled eggs so they last in the fridge.

Freezing Guide

It is not recommended to freeze hard boiled eggs. Freezing the eggs will change the texture and they become very unappealing.

Tips

  • Starting the eggs in cold water before bringing them to a boil will help prevent the eggs from cracking.
  • Once the water is boiling remove the pot from the heat and leave it covered. The steam and the hot water will finish cooking the eggs.
  • To make hard boiled eggs easier to peel, transfer them immediately to an ice water bath or run under very cold water until they are cool to the touch.
  • Egg shells leftover from hard boiled eggs can be added to the compost where they will provide much needed calcium to your garden.

Instructions

Stovetop:

  • Add the eggs to a large pot with a lid in a single layer along the bottom of the pot. Fill the pot with enough cold water to just cover the eggs by about 1 inch and cover with a lid.
  • Place over high heat and bring to a rapid boil. Turn off the heat and let the eggs sit in the hot water for 10-12 minutes.
  • Carefully drain the hot water and immediately run the cooked eggs under cold water until they are cool to the touch or transfer to an ice water bath until cooled.
  • Once cool, gently crack the egg, being careful not to damage the egg white and peel off the shell. Rinse the peeled egg under water to dislodge any bits of shell.

Oven Method:

  • Preheat the oven to 325°F.
  • Fill each cup of a 12 cup muffin tin with a whole unopened egg.
  • Bake at 325°F for 30 minutes. Once finished, immediately run under cold water or transfer to an ice water bath until cool to the touch.
  • Once cool, gently crack the egg, being careful not to damage the egg white and peel off the shell. Rinse the peeled egg under water to dislodge any bits of shell.
