What is the difference between gratin and casserole?

Gratin and casserole are both baked dishes. But they aren’t exactly the same. Gratin has a creamy or cheesy sauce that’s covered with a layer of crunchy topping. Think breadcrumbs.

Casserole is more of a layered dish. Meats, veggies, and rice (or potatoes) create the magic here. There’s no sauce. Only natural juices from all the ingredients.

What spices make beef taste better?

Beef is easy to please. Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, cumin, and oregano – are all good choices. And, of course, you need chili powder.

How to serve Mexican Casserole with Beef?

A steamed veggie side goes perfectly well with the dish. But if you have too many hungry tummies on the table, Mexican salad or tacos are amazing. Rice and beans can also come to the rescue. Oh, and a generous drizzle of your favorite salsa! It adds an extra zing.

Chef Tips:

  • Brown the beef on medium-high heat to get all that flavor and texture. But don’t stir it too much. Ideally, it should stick to the pan first. Now chop it into pieces.
  • Half the corn tortillas and layer them in the dish. This way, they won’t crumble while cooking.
  • Frozen corn kernels are good to go too. You don’t have to thaw them first.
  • Use 2 cups of sour cream for a creamier version.
  • Top the dish with a lot of shredded cheese.

Variations:

Create your own magic with the best Mexican casserole with ground beef by tweaking the recipe. Here are the variations that will work for sure.

  • If you like your casserole extra spicy, add some jalapenos to the mix.
  • Add cooked macaroni noodles for a veggie macaroni casserole.
  • Swap ground beef with ground turkey for a leaner version.
  • Add bell peppers (diced) for a nice pop of color.
  • Replace the black beans with pinto or garbanzo beans.
