How to Make It
Start the best French style braised short ribs recipe by heating your olive oil over medium-high heat. We suggest a nice stir-fry pot so you can brown the meat well on all sides. Medium-high heat helps it cook quickly without burning. Not bad!

For your easy French style braised short ribs for beginners, you should add the veggies to the pot and leave the meat drippings. Leaving it lets the veggies saute nicely and soften up for a truly delicious burst of flavor.

Try a bite of veggies every couple minutes to a) taste test your simple French style braised short ribs meal and b) check their softness.

Pour all your quick French style braised short ribs recipe ingredients into the pot now. Mix them up evenly (use a soft spatula to help scrape up anything sticking to the side) and add the meat. Pour the meat in slowly to let it simmer gently on the pot.
Adding the beef broth.

Adding the dry red cooking wine.

Adding the balsamic vinegar.

Adding the tomato paste.

Adding the dried rosemary.

Adding the ground thyme.

Slowly reduce the heat (we like a slow reduction because it keeps the food boiling a little longer) and simmer for two hours. Here’s a pro tip: cover the meal to trap in the moisture and make your ribs even tastier! Keep your parsley to the side for a later garnish (rinse it out to add a little texture).

Now ready to enjoy!

Tips for Success
- Make sure you use the freshest ribs to get the best results
- Don’t skimp on the two-hour wait: you want the ribs to be dripping off the bone
- Try variations like vegetable oil to make a slightly healthier meal
- Consider a wok if you want to create evenly cooked and delicious ingredients
- A little soy sauce can do wonders for this dish, especially with rice or couscous
- Leave a tiny gap on the cover so that some steam can escape while it simmers
Storage & Reheating
- Let your ribs cool completely before spooning into airtight containers
- Refrigerate in these containers for up to three days before throwing away
- Reheat in a microwave for 3-4 minutes, depending on how much you’re serving
- Wrap in plastic wrap or airtight packages to freeze for three months
- Unthaw by carefully microwaving for five minutes or leaving in the fridge overnight
Serving Suggestions
- Replace the short ribs with pork if you want a healthy French style braised short ribs version
- Serve with a nice side salad, rice, or couscous to add some flavor to your simple French style braised short ribs meal
- Boil some asparagus and broccoli to improve your homemade French style braised short ribs ideas
- Serve directly on a bed of couscous, as it will soak up the juices and create a luscious meal
- Make two versions (one without veggies) if your kids are a little sensitive to mushrooms
Notes
I love these family friendly French style braised short ribs because they feel so close to a restaurant-quality meal! If you’re patient (like my mom) and give these ingredients time to simmer, we know that you’re going to fall in love with this meal and serve it time and time again.
Mom would make it pretty regularly during the summer, actually. Our Fourth of July celebrations were never complete without some! In fact, during college, I used to make these and have leftovers for days.
If you have teens getting ready to move out, teaching them this meal is a beautiful way to bond and a powerful way to prepare them for living on their own. It can easily be adapted to fit unique tastes, too!
