Black Forest Crinkle Cookies

These soft, chewy, and fudgy black forest cookies are a chocolate lovers dream! To get the dramatic “crinkle” make sure that you roll the balls in powdered sugar not once, but twice. As these powdered sugar covered balls of dough bake, they spread making cracks in the surface that reveal the soft chocolate cookie underneath. These scrumptious cookies speckled with tart cherries, chunks of chocolate, and encased in a coating of powered sugar make them irresistible. ;)

Black Forest Crinkle Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup cocoa powder (not Dutch process)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder, mixed with 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup semi-sweet mini chocolate chips
  • 1/3 cup dried tart cherries (1.5 ounces)
  • 3/4 cup sifted powdered sugar

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt together in a bowl.
  3. Melt butter in a second small bowl in a microwave or a small saucepan over low heat.
  4. Add cocoa to melted butter, whisking until smooth. Stir in the egg, espresso mixture, and vanilla, fully blending in each one before adding the next.
  5. Stir chocolate mixture into flour mixture just until combined.
  6. Fold chocolate chips and cherries into the dough until evenly distributed. Shape into generous 2 inch balls using a cookie scoop or a heaping tablespoon measure.
  7. Roll balls in powdered sugar two times, then arrange on prepared baking sheets, spacing 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 12 – 14 minutes or until cookies are cracked, yet still soft, do not overbake.
  9. Let cookies cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack.

    I love cookies that you roll up in a ball, they’re fun to get the kids to help with. I’ve never had black forest krinkles but they looks and sound good. There are so many new cookies I need to try this season!

    My mom used to make these when I was little, but they were always a little too chocolaty for me. I love how you added some dried cherries though. I’ll definitely have to try these!

      They are definitely chocolately!! The addition of the cherries just put them over the top! :)

    These look so yummy! Don’t you just love the combination of chocolate and cherries? A few weeks ago, I made Black Forest cookies with cherry icing (http://theculinarycouple.com/2010/11/09/oktoberfest-black-forest-cherry-cookies/), but I think yours are worth trying, too!

    Those looks delicious! There really is no better combination that chocolate and cherries together. The crackling is beautiful as well. What a great cookie!

    Sadly, I do not care for fruit and chocolate paired together… but is that enough to stop me from making these? Non! I would just leave out the cherries… and perhaps increase the ratio of chippies :)

    I just made these cookies and I have to say they are my new fav :) I also tried the Triple-Chocolate Cranberry Pecan Oatmeal Cookies…also a great cookie!

    Yummy! I just made a batch & they are so good! I used chopped maraschino cherries instead of the dried once & didn’t have espresso powder (although I will pick some up next time I’m out & try the recipe again)! Will add to my list of favorites!
