I have the perfect fall dessert for you guys today…Apple Crumble Bars. Ahh, apples. My favorite fall fruit to bake with right after pumpkin! Nothing gets me ready for fall faster than a trip to our local apple orchard to pick our own apples. It’s a fall tradition that I’ve looked forward to ever since I was a little girl. So what do you do after you picked a bushel of apples? Make these incredible crumble bars of course! The bonus, these bars are super quick and simple to make, in fact, the crust and crumb topping are the exact same thing!

It is important that you store these apple pie bars are stored properly to make them last the longest. Apple pie bars should be covered well with plastic wrap or stored in an airtight container. You can keep the bars at room temperature or you can store it in the refrigerator.

When you are choosing sweet apples, try Golden Delicious, Jonagolds, or Braeburns.

How to make the apple crumble topping

The best part of these apple crumble bars is that the crumb topping and the crust are made from the same thing. This makes it much easier to make this dessert. Mix together the crumb ingredients in a mixer until it resembles coarse cornmeal. The butter will be about the size of small peas. Half of the mixture will go into the bottom of the pan as the crust and the other half will be used for the crumb topping.

How to make easy apple crumble bars

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Butter the bottom and sides of a 9-by-13-inch glass or light-colored metal baking pan. Put a long piece of parchment paper in the bottom of the pan, letting the parchment extend up the two short sides of the pan and overhang slightly on both ends. (This will make it easy to remove the bars from the pan after they have baked.) Butter the parchment.

For the Crumble: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, lemon zest, and cinnamon on low speed. Add the butter, toss with a fork to coat with the flour mixture. Add egg and mix on medium-low speed until the texture resembles coarse cornmeal, with the butter pieces no larger than small peas. Pat half of dough into the prepared pan. Place reserved half aside. Place the pan and the remainder of the dough in the refrigerator while you prepare the filling.

For the Apple Filling: In medium bowl, gently toss diced apples and lemon juice together; set aside.

In a separate small bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Pour over the apples and mix gently.

Spread the apple mixture evenly over the crust. Crumble the remaining dough over the apple layer.
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until top is slightly brown. Cool completely on wire rack then transfer to the refrigerator to chill before cutting into squares. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
