How to Make It
Start your family friendly cheesy ground beef and cabbage skillet by cooking the beef, onions, and peppers in a skillet. Pro tip: Make a kid-friendly version by cooking a small portion of meat without these veggies.
Adding the onions.

Adding the green peppers.

Never cook this meal on high heat! Instead, leave it on medium-high so that the meat and veggies become brown and tender and cook fully.

Here are some great homemade cheesy ground beef and cabbage skillet ideas for this next step: drizzle in the minced garlic slowly as it sautes to cook it evenly. Drain the fat now to keep your meat from getting too dense.

All your seasonings need to go in now. Drizzle them slowly as you stir to coat everything fully. Suggestion? Add just a BIT of salt and taste test till you get the right level. This meal can get salty if you’re not careful.

Now comes the fun part! Add all the beef broth, diced tomatoes, and chili and stir. Why is this fun? You’re going to get a nice puff of delicious AROMA right about now!
Adding the beef broth.

Adding the diced tomatoes.

We’re getting close to the end now! Layer your dish with cabbage and cover with a lid. Lower the heat until it simmers. The cover traps in moisture and keeps this meal juicy!

Once cooked, add your cheese. We like adding several types to give this meal a denser flavor profile.

Stir until the cheese melts and drips off the spoon.

Now ready to enjoy with your family!

Tips for Success
- Cook everything slowly to ensure even browning
- Wash your beef first to get rid of any fat you don’t want
- Gather any grease in a jar to avoid clogging your sink
- Season as you go to keep your dish to your preference
- Add a little water if the skillet gets too dense
Storage & Reheating
Once the food has cooled to room temperature, transfer it to an airtight container and place it in the refrigerator for up to 3 or 4 days. Even better, you can store this dish in the freezer for up to 3 months. Simply transfer it to an airtight and freezer-safe container once the food has cooled to room temperature. Reheat on a skillet over medium heat until heated through.
Serving Suggestions
- Serve this dish on its own for a low-carb alternative
- Pair with rice for a healthy and tasty option
- Add mashed potatoes and green beans for a classic meal
- Crust-heavy bread helps soak up the juices perfectly
- Try a light salad if you want to add a little bit more health to this meal
Notes
There’s only one thing you can call this meal: comfort food! It is so easy to cook and so tasty that it’s hard not to eat all of it in one go! Honestly, my picky kids even enjoy it, despite the peppers!
When you warm them evenly enough, you soften them heavily. Even better, the meat often overpowers the pepper taste to ensure an even better flavor. Strongly suggest this for balmy fall days or saving some bags up for winter weather.
