Tips and FAQs:

Is a crockpot and a slow cooker the same thing?

Yes, whether you have a brand name Crock Pot or a slow cooker, you can make this easy recipe.

What cut of meat is used for cubed steak?

Cube steak, also known as minute steak, is a cheap and affordable cut of beef that is generally pounded thin. Although a tougher cut of beef, it’s made tender thanks to the long cooking time in the crock pot, and also works well for stew.

Will cubed steak dry out in the crockpot?

The beef in this recipe stays juicy and tender since it’s simmered in a rich gravy for several hours.

Do I need to sear the steak before adding it to the crockpot?

For extra flavour you can certainly sear the beef in a skillet prior to adding it to the slow cooker. This is an extra step and if you are in a hurry there is nothing wrong with throwing the beef right into the crock pot. It will still  be absolutely delicious.

Can I use a different type of gravy instead of beef?

In place of beef gravy, you can use chicken or turkey gravy. The taste will be different but you will still love it!

Can I add vegetables to the crockpot with the steak and gravy?

There are many vegetables that work well in this recipe and can add some flavour and beneficial nutrients. Try some potatoes, carrots, onions, or mushrooms in the gravy.

Can I make this recipe on the stove instead of the crockpot?

It would be difficult to recreate the same long simmering time on the stove, and you would not be able to “set it and forget it” like you can with a Crock Pot. If you decide to do this be sure to keep a very close eye on it and reduce the cooking time as needed.

Is there an alternative to cubed steak for this recipe?

Although cube steak is a perfect and budget friendly cut for recipes like this, you can use any cut of beef you like. From eye of round to ribeye, it will all taste delicious in this rich gravy.

Can I make this recipe in an Instant pot?

Absolutely! Using either the slow cooker function on an instant pot, or speeding things up using the pressure cooker function, this recipe works well in an instant pot.
