Should I use stock or water for this recipe?

Although most people will use stock for a stronger flavor. Using water in this recipe is suggested. The water will still produce a great flavor in the beans, plus it is a healthier option.

Do I need to soak the beans overnight?

No that is not needed, however, soaking the beans will help them cook faster.

Can I use the ham hock?

Yes, the ham hock will produce more flavor to the dish. Just be sure that you remove it before serving.

Can I use bouillon cubes instead of Chicken stock?

You could definitely switch the two ingredients for one another. Simply follow the directions for bouillon cubes by dissolving in the water first and then continuing on with the recipe.

What should I serve with Bean and Ham Soup?

If you feel you need to add another dish or side to the soup, I would suggest a couple of slices of crusty bread, rice or potatoes. This dish does not need accompaniment though.

What can I do to thicken the Ham and Bean Soup?

Most often people will use a roux, which is made from flour and a choice of fat, such as butter. Once the roux is combined, it can be added to the soup, stirred well and it will begin to thicken.
