Unicorn Harry Potter Cake Recipe

I am a huge fan of all things Unicorn and Harry Potter, so it just made sense to combine the two and develop a recipe for this Unicorn Harry Potter Cake. Who can resist a moist layered cake themed with your favorite character? I know I can’t! I make this Harry Potter cake with two maroon layers and one that is a beautiful golden yellow color, just like the movie.

If you haven’t made many layered cakes, I understand if you have some worries about doing it properly! Don’t worry; I promise it’s genuinely not that hard at all. This cake is actually fantastic for someone who is just starting out or a seasoned pro. It’s simple, yet the fun design is lovely, and the end result is going to be fabulous. Make sure to let us know if you made it and how it turned out.

What is the Best Way to Dye My Cake Batter?

By far, the best way to dye your cake batter is to use gel food coloring. Any other kind of food coloring will not mix as well and won’t have the same effect. Gel dye has a much higher concentration than other dyes, so you don’t need as much of it to get the job done.

What Harry Potter Cake Decorations Should I Use?

You can use any cake decorations that are Harry Potter themed that you want. I love adding some glasses and the Unicorn Ears & Horn kit. Feel free to try out other options as well to see what you like best. If you are hosting a Harry Potter-themed party, be sure to add some awesome Harry Potter decorations too.

Tips for Making a Layered Cake

Following these tips will help you make the best-layered cake you can. There are just a few minor things you can do to prevent a headache later, and you’ll be glad you did.

First, make sure to always grease or spray your pan. This is the first defense against preventing the cakes from sticking.

Secondly, use room temperature ingredients like eggs because they will mix better and cook more evenly.

Lastly, don’t bake the cakes too long or too little. If you cook them too long, they are going to be hard and dense, and of course, if you bake them too little, they are going to be mushy and fall apart.

Ingredients

The base of these cakes is a white cake mix. You can also exchange that for a yellow or french vanilla cake if you want as well. It will just add a little bit of different flavors, and the colors may vary slightly as well.

White cake:

  • 2 boxes of white cake mix
  • Large egg whites
  • Water
  • Canola oil
  • Maroon and Golden yellow gel food coloring
  • 3 – 9inch round cake pans
  • 1 – 10inch round cake board

Vanilla Frosting

  • Softened unsalted butter
  • Powdered sugar
  • Heavy whipping cream
  • Vanilla extract
  • Maroon, black and golden yellow gel food coloring

How to Make a Unicorn Harry Potter Cake

This Unicorn Harry Potter cake is a blast to decorate. The part that takes the longest is baking the cakes and letting them cool, but once it’s time to decorate, it’s time to get excited!

Cake directions:

First Step: Spray some cake pans with non-stick baking spray and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Second Step: Add all the ingredients for the cake into a large bowl and mix with a hand mixer. The batter should be combined and smooth.

Third Step: Put 3 1/2 cups of batter into a bowl and add in the yellow gel coloring and mix well.

Fourth Step: Add some drops of maroon gel food coloring to the other bowl of cake batter.

Fifth Step: Put the cake batter that is yellow into one of the cake pans.

Sixth Step: Divide the maroon cake batter between the other two cake pans.

Seventh Step: Bake the cakes for 28-32 minutes or until you can insert a toothpick and it comes out clean.

Eighth Step: Allow the cakes to cool completely.

Frosting directions:

First Step: Beat the ingredients for the frosting in a stand mixer. Don’t put in the food coloring yet, though. It is ready when the frosting is smooth, creamy, and has stiff peaks.

Second Step: Put 1/2 cup of the frosting in a bowl and add a few drops of the black gel food coloring. Mix until it’s all one color.

Third Step: Add 1 1/2 cups of frosting to a medium bowl and mix a couple of drops of the golden yellow food coloring and combine well.

Fourth Step: Mix together 1 1/2 cups of frosting ina bowl and add the maroon gel food coloring. Combine until all mixed well.

Fifth Step: The rest of the frosting should be kept white.

Building the Cake directions:

First Step: Place the first layer of cake onto a cake board and carefully cut the dome off, so it’s smooth and even.

Second Step: Cut the tops of the other two layers of cakes.

Third Step: Put 1 cup of the maroon colored frosting and 1 cup of yellow frosting into a large piping bag, then set aside.

Fourth Step: Use 1/2 cup of yellow frosting and put it into a piping bag.

Fifth Step:  Add 1 cup of white frosting to the first cake layer and spread, so it is smooth and even.

Sixth Step: Add the second layer of cake and add another cup of white frosting.

Seventh Step: Put the last layer of cake on and frost the entire cake with the rest of the white frosting.

Decorating directions:

First Step: Using a round cookie cutter, lightly press it on the front of the cake and form the shape of glasses.

Second Step: Take black frosting and outline the glasses and create frames.

Third Step: Take the golden yellow frosting and add winky eyes and a lightning bolt.

Fourth Step: Using the piping bag, start adding pieces of hair for the unicorn around the top and along one side of the cake, so you have a mane.

Fifth Step: Add the horn and ears to the cake.

Sixth Step: Put the cake in the refrigerator so it can chill, and the frosting can set up.
