Variations to Try

The base of this mousse is made from melted marshmallow and whipped cream. This can carry a lot of different flavors making this dessert easily customizable.

Change the chocolate – Any of your favorite types of chocolate can be used in this recipe to make a different type of mousse. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate, or butterscotch are all great choices or additions to this recipe.

Add some toppings – While the shaved chocolate is a great topping, try adding some crushed toasted nuts, coconut shavings, or chocolate syrup to add even more indulgent flavor.

Change the crust – The crust of this recipe is a store bought Oreo crust. You can choose to make this yourself if you want, or you can use a completely different crust! A traditional shortcrust or a graham cracker crust would work very well.

Flavor the whipped cream – The fluffy layer of whipped cream on top of this no bake dessert is a great place to add some extra goodies. Adding chocolate, caramel, or raspberry sauce to the cream before shipping can make for a fun mousse tart with a twist.

Pro Tips

  • Do not cook the mousse over high heat. Low and slow is the key. You want the marshmallows, butter, and chocolate to slowly melt together into a smooth chocolate mixture.
  • Be sure to let the chocolate mixture cool properly before folding in the whipped cream. If the chocolate is too warm it will flatten the whipped cream and it won’t set properly.
  • Give each layer enough time to set. Rushing this dessert will cause the layers to run together and you won’t have the nice beautiful distinct layers in every slice.
  • To get nice chocolate shavings use a vegetable peeler and slowly run it down the side of a chocolate bar. You can also use a cheese grater but the shavings won’t be as distinct.
