Skyline Cheese Coney {Cincinnati Chili}

We love watching College Football and eating the most fun food, which means another delicious Football bite! Today I’m bringing you a favorite in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio-Skyline Cheese Coneys. If you’ve never had the privilege of dining at Skyline Chili and having one of their famous Skyline Cheese Coneys, you’re missing out! This coney dog is probably nothing like the coney dogs you’re used to. The chili sauce that tops this coney dog is called Cincinnati Chili and is seasoned with cocoa powder, chili powder, cinnamon, allspice, and oregano.

An all-beef hot dog in a steamed bun, with mustard, covered with Cincinnati Chili, diced onions, and a mound of shredded cheddar cheese. The chili really is the star of this Cheese Coney. It starts with a warmly-spiced meat sauce with a touch of chocolate added, and it’s slow-simmered to just the right constancy. Not too thick, not too runny. Just perfect!

What is A Skyline Cheesy Coney

It’s one of the best hot dogs you’ll ever eat. It’s traditionally made with hot dogs that have been steamed and placed inside of a bun. Then it’s covered with an insanely good chili, lots of onions, and melty cheese.

What Makes Cincinnati Chili Different From Other Varieties

Cincinnati chili has a lovely flavor combination that is complete with cocoa and cinnamon. It’s unique, delicious, and unforgettable.

How to Store Leftover Chili

Let the skyline chili cool down to room temperature. Then pour it into a food storage container. It needs to have a tight-fitting lid and can be refrigerated for up to 3 days.

Additionally, you can freeze this Cincinnati chili recipe by cooling it and placing it in a freezer-safe container or bag. It will last 2-3 months in the freezer. Defrost in the fridge before reheating.

Reheat in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stovetop over medium heat.

Best Hot Dogs To Make A Coney

While you can use any kind of hot dog that you like, we recommend using an all-beef hot dog. Using beef hotdogs gives them a much better flavor, and you won’t be disappointed.

How to Make Skyline Cheese Coney

When you sink your teeth into that first bite of hotdog that’s oozing with hot chili and cheese, you are going to fall in love. I can’t wait to share the directions with you so you can easily make it. Let’s take a look at the step-by-step instructions.

First Step: Begin by heating up a dutch oven using medium-high heat. Then add the oil to the pan until it is hot and shimmering. Sprinkle in the onions and saute them for around 8 minutes or until they have softened and browned up around the edges.

Second Step: Mix in the garlic, chili powder, tomato paste, oregano, cocoa powder, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Cook for around 1 minute or until it becomes fragrant.

Third Step: Pour in the chicken broth and stir. Mix in the tomato sauce, vinegar, and sugar and combine.

Fourth Step: Add in the ground beef. Crumble it using a wooden spoon to make sure that there are no large clumps. Boil the chili, then turn down the heat to a medium-low setting. All the chili time to simmer until it has thickened a little bit, and the color is a deep dark brown. This typically takes around 15-20 minutes. Add a sprinkle or two of salt.

NOTE: You can refrigerate the chili for up to 3 days, or if you need to freeze, it will last around 2 months.

Fifth Step: Cook the hotdogs with the method of your choice. We like to boil them, but you can also grill or microwave them until they are hot all the way through. Then place the hot dogs on some hot, freshly steamed buns. Then add some chili, tangy mustard, fresh onions, and shredded cheese.

Enjoy!
