What is broiling?

Broiling is a cooking technique that uses heat from the upper element in your oven to cook different dishes from the top for quick cooking and flavor.

Broiling vs grilling

The primary difference between broiling and grilling is the heat source. In broiling, the heat is applied from the top, while in grilling, it is from the bottom. The broiling technique is used for quick cooking and flavor, while grilling gives meals a smoky flavor.

Are broiled scallops healthy?

Scallops are a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and healthy fats. This improves heart health, balances cholesterol levels, helps lower blood pressure, and improves blood circulation. Therefore, broiled scallops are quite healthy.

How To Clean Scallops?

Scallops can contain sand and grit; therefore, you need to clean them thoroughly before cooking. The best way to clean scallops is by placing them in a bowl of water and swirling them around a bit to get the sand particles out. Next, place them in a colander and put them under running water. Gently rinse the scallops with the help of a brush to rid them of any other impurities. Once done, pat them dry with a paper towel.

What type of scallops should I buy?

You’ll find two types of scallops: Bay scallops and sea scallops. Bay scallops are smaller and cheaper than sea scallops and have a mild taste. Sea scallops are big in size and have more flavor, making them relatively expensive.

Nevertheless, whichever type of scallop you wish to buy, make sure to get firm and dry scallops, not soft and shiny ones. Also, ensure they are fresh, as frozen and pre-cooked scallops won’t taste good when broiled.

Is it better to bake or broil scallops?

While there are many ways to cook scallops, broiling is the best. It is quick and easy and gives the scallops a nice sear while keeping them juicy on the inside. Baking is also good; however, if not done right, it can result in overcooked and rubbery scallops.

What temperature do you broil scallops?

If you’re broiling the scallops in an oven, the range is between 500 to 550 degrees F. However, you can pre-heat the oven to the highest range but bring it down to the lowest when you place the scallops in it and continue broiling at this temperature until they are done.

  • Bay scallops

  • Butter, melted
  • Lemon juice

How To Make Broiled Scallops

Step 1. The first thing to do is turn your oven to the broil setting. Let it preheat for a few minutes prior to cooking the scallops.

Step 2. Rinse scallops thoroughly.

If they were frozen prior to cooking you must make sure they are completely thawed first. Broiling half-thawed seafood can result in parts not being fully cooked.

Step 3. Place scallops in a mixing bowl and toss with melted butter, garlic salt, and lemon juice till everything is fully combined.

Step 4. Place seasoned scallops on a greased baking pan and broil for 6-8 minutes.

Once you notice the top getting a golden brown color, flip them over to sear the other side.

Step 5. Remove from the oven and serve immediately.

Serve right away as the scallops tend to lose their heat pretty quickly.

Seasoning for scallops

I used basic seasoning for my broiled scallops recipe. However, depending on your taste and preference, you can also use lemon pepper, cajun seasoning, tarragon, thyme, parsley, chives, or basil too.

What pairs well with scallops?

If you want to make your broiled scallops a complete and fulfilling meal, you can pair them with quinoa salad, rice, pasta, grilled asparagus, or roasted Brussels sprouts.

Tips For The Best Broiled Scallops Recipe

Here are some valuable tips for the best broiled scallops recipe:

  • Make sure the scallops are completely dry before adding the seasoning.
  • After seasoning, keep the scallops at room temperature for 10 minutes before broiling to avoid them becoming tense.
  • If you’re in a rush, you can season the scallops ahead of time and keep them in the refrigerator for 12 hours.
  • Once broiled, you can sprinkle parmesan cheese on top for added flavor.
  • Use high-heat cooking oil to ensure the scallops are cooked evenly from all sides.

Can cooked scallops be reheated?

Yes, you can certainly reheat cooked scallops in the oven or microwave. In an oven, bake them for 5 to 7 minutes or until they are properly heated inside out. In a microwave, heat them for a couple of minutes or until they are evenly heated.

Can cooked scallops be frozen?

Yes, cooked scallops can be frozen. Place cooked and cooled scallops on a baking dish and freeze them for a couple of hours. Once they are completely frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or air-tight container and place them in the freezer again. They will be good enough for up to 6 months.

For reheating, make sure to thaw the frozen scallops completely and reheat following the steps mentioned above.
