Why Do I Love Hamburger Gravy?
My family and I are, and will always be a fan of this Hamburger Gravy recipe. This dish is so delicious, easy and quick to make. And it tastes so divine; it’s a big yes for me. I’ve been having it since childhood and don’t see myself getting over it anytime soon.
How To Add Flavor To Beef Gravy?
I like to do the following to make my beef gravy even better.
- Adding fresh herbs. Add herbs as a whole so it is easy to remove them later if needed.
- Using full-fat cream and full-fat milk. Fat is not all bad. It makes your food taste good by adding flavor to it. So don’t shy away from a bit of fat.
- Turning up the heat but not the stove. If you can tolerate spicy food, toss in some finely chopped jalapenos to make your beef gravy even better.
Is It Better To Make Beef Gravy With Cornstarch Or Flour?
Cornstarch does take less time and less quantity to thicken the gravy. But, for my old-fashioned hamburger gravy, I like to go for cornflour. This is because cornstarch requires very high heat to stay up the thickening process. And I usually don’t prefer going that far with heat.
Does Higher Heat Thicken Gravy?
In simple words, yes. One way to make your hamburger gravy thicker is by reducing the amount of fluids in it, which is going to be either water or milk in this case. And you can dry up the extra fluid by providing more heat, but make sure you’re not giving too much heat.
Is Gravy Better With Water Or Milk?
Some people prefer making gravy with water instead of milk. You can surely do so too, but I prefer using milk, just like given in the recipe. This is because using milk for your gravy makes it much creamier and more flavorful. So, if you’re a fan of creamy texture, you should make your gravy with milk. However, if you’re lactose intolerant or if you don’t like milk, you can skip it and replace it with water. Even broth would do.
How To Serve Hamburger Gravy?
Some sides I personally love for my hamburger gravy are grilled potato salad, tomato cucumber salad, baked potato bar, vinegar coleslaw, and instant pot mac and cheese. But you can also serve it with french fries, which gives it the perfect old-fashioned hamburger recipe vibe.
Tips
Some of the best tips I can give you for making a heavenly delicious hamburger gravy are:
- I always remove excess fat.
- I make sure my gravy is thick enough and not too runny.
- I use a whisk to prevent lumps while mixing the flour.
Ingredients:
- Ground beef
- Flour
- Milk
- Onion salt
- Garlic powder
- Onion chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
How to make Hamburger Gravy:
Step 1. Place the ground beef and onion into a large skillet over medium-high heat on the stove. Cook until the meat is completely browned and the onion has softened. Drain any excess fat.
Step 2. Reduce the heat to medium, and stir in salt and pepper to taste, the onion salt, and the garlic powder.
Step 3. Sprinkle the flour over the ground beef, and stir to combine well, sauteing for another 30 seconds.
Step 4. Pour the milk into the skillet, and stir to combine. Simmer over medium heat until the sauce has thickened into a gravy consistency.
Step 5. Top with freshly chopped parsley if desired, and serve over mashed potatoes, biscuits, etc.

Can I Make Ahead Hamburger Gravy?
Yes, you can make your hamburger gravy ahead of time and store your hamburger gravy. No need to do it on the spot and you save so much time in the bulk making.
How To Store Hamburger Gravy?
Just put your hamburger gravy in an air-tight container and keep it in the fridge, then reheat it whenever you want.
How To Reheat Hamburger Gravy?
Put your gravy into a frying pan slowly, then reheat your hamburger gravy at low flame and keep stirring as you go on. When it begins simmering, turn the heat off, and you’re good to go.
Another easy way to reheat your hamburger gravy is to put it in a microwave for about 30 seconds. Make sure the pot you’re using is not too high and is microwave friendly.
How Much Does Hamburger Gravy Last On The Fridge?
You can store your hamburger gravy in a refrigerator for 4-5 days or a week at max. After that, you have to either use it or you can freeze it for 5-6 months. My pro tip for you here is to add some extra toppings as you reheat the gravy to give it a surge of flavor.

HI! I was so surprised to see this recipe. I grew up on hamburger gravy. Delicious over mashed potatoes. My mom made it with water also. The gravy was brown. I preferred the water over the milk version. I thought my family was the only ones who ate hamburger gravy when I was growing up. It’s an inexpensive comfort food I still enjoy today and I am 61 🙂
