Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
Possible variations include:
- Refrigerated crescent rolls: The brand doesn’t matter. You can use the full-size crescent roll, or the crescent “sheets” and just cut them into triangles.
- Ground sausage: A mild pork sausage is the classic meat to use. You could use a spicy sausage if you want a little kick.
- Ground meat: You can also swap out the sausage and use chicken or ground beef.
- Cream cheese: This needs to be softened to easily mix. Just leave it on the counter for about 30 minutes. Full-fat cream cheese gives the best flavor.
- Shredded cheese: We love sharp cheddar here. It cuts through the richness of the sausage.
- Swap out the cheese: The sausage cream cheese crescents are versatile. You can switch the cheese to a type that you and your family prefer. For example, you could leave out the Cheddar Cheese and use Pepper Jack cheese for a new flavor combination.
Healthy sausage cream cheese crescents version
Try adding some diced bell peppers to the mix. For the meat, feel free to use ground chicken or turkey. And the 1/3 less fat cream cheese (Neufchâtel cheese) tastes just as yummy as the regular cream cheese!

How to make Sausage Cream Cheese Crescents:
This is a super easy sausage cream cheese crescents for beginners recipe.
Step 1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Get this going first, so it’s hot and ready.
Step 2. Roll the crescent rolls out flat, and cut each triangle in half lengthwise for bite-sized crescents. If you want them larger, you can skip cutting them.

Step 3. Cook the ground sausage until it is completely browned. Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium-high heat. Be sure to break it apart into small crumbles.
Step 4. Add the cooled ground sausage to a mixing bowl with the cream cheese. Be sure to let the sausage cool a bit. If it’s too hot, it’ll melt the cream cheese into a liquid

Step 5: Then, add shredded cheese of your choosing as well as pepper to taste. Stir to combine completely. You shouldn’t see any big chunks of plain cream cheese.

Step 6. Spoon a small ball of the sausage mixture into the top of each piece of crescent roll where it is fattest. A small cookie scoop (about a tablespoon) works perfectly for this.

Step 7. Starting at the widest end, roll the crescent roll dough over the sausage filling, forming a mini stuffed crescent roll. Just roll them up loosely toward the small point.

Step 8. Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Lay them out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (easy cleanup). They’ll be puffy and golden.

Tips for Success
- Drain the sausage completely. Too much grease will make the crescents soggy. I like to press it with a paper towel.
- Use softened cream cheese. If it’s cold, it won’t mix with the sausage and you’ll get clumps.
- Don’t overfill the crescents. Too much filling will spill out the sides while baking. A tablespoon is plenty.
- Let them cool for 5 minutes. The filling is very hot right out of the oven. Letting them rest helps them set up.
Storage & Reheating
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will last for up to 3 days.
To reheat them, you can use the microwave. But they will be soft.
I recommend using your air fryer. Just put them in there for about three to four minutes and you’re all set! Or the oven, 350°F for 5-7 minutes.
Want a freezer stash for busy mornings? Lay the baked and cooled crescents out on a baking sheet, freeze until solid. Then, move them to a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Reheat from frozen in the oven.
Serving Suggestions
These are fantastic on their own as an appetizer.
If you’re serving them for breakfast or brunch, they are great with scrambled eggs. A side of fresh fruit like berries or sliced melon cuts the richness perfectly.
Here are some more easy appetizers that would pair well with the crescent roll appetizer. Try these fried salmon patties, cucumber subs, and fried pickles, or even try out this seared scallops recipe.
