Spanish Coffee Cake
This cake is unlike anything you have probably had before. It’s the right amount of sweet and has lots of yummy cinnamon. Original Spanish coffee cake recipes call for a little bit of cayenne pepper. While I didn’t add any to this recipe, you can undoubtedly sprinkle some into the batter.
It will give you that unique and excellent Spanish flavor that many of us crave. Or you can leave it out as I do. It’s entirely up to you. The only reason why I leave it out is because of the kiddos and what they prefer.
We love to serve this Spanish coffee cake at brunch for the holidays. It always gets eaten up right away and is a lovely way to start any day. We usually make a pot of coffee or sip on some hot tea to go with it, but that’s entirely up to you. If you don’t want to make it for brunch, you could also make it for an afternoon snack too.
There truly is no wrong occasion to make a homemade coffee cake. Sometimes I make one just because I am craving it.
Sometimes, if we hear of a friend that has been under the weather or has a new baby, we will bring them this coffee cake. It’s always enjoyed and makes them feel appreciated. So, giving it as a gift is a wonderful idea too.
Best Way to Store Coffee Cake
After the Spanish coffee cake has cooled down all the way, place it inside of a food storage container. You need it to be kept airtight and away from any heat sources like the stove or even the dishwasher. Also, make sure it’s stored away from sunlight too. Otherwise, the cake will build up condensation and will go bad quickly. The homemade coffee cake typically lasts up to five days at room temperature.
Does Coffee Cake Need to Be Refrigerated

Yep! You can easily freeze this coffee cake. Simply wrap it in plastic wrap for an added layer of protection. Then make sure it’s in a container with a tight-fitting lid. Freeze for up to three months. Thaw on the counter or in the fridge before serving and enjoy!
Can You Substitute The Buttermilk?
Yes! It’s not a problem at all if you don’t have any buttermilk. You can quickly and easily make homemade buttermilk instead. All you need is one cup of regular milk. Then add in one teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar, depending on what you have on hand. Allow the homemade buttermilk to sit for 10-15 minutes, and then you can use it the way the recipe calls for. You can use homemade buttermilk for all sorts of recipes too. It’s a handy kitchen hack to have in mind.
