What is the most common mistake in making French toast?
One of the most common mistakes in making French toast is not thoroughly mixing the egg mixture. The egg must be completely incorporated and smooth. The other mistake many people make is using too much dairy. Follow the recipes closely and mix the amount of milk with the eggs. Do not add additional milk or oversaturate the bread, causing it to become soggy.
Why is milk important in French toast?
The mixture of egg and milk is what gives French toast its texture. The perfect blend of the two ingredients allows it to be lightly crisp on the outside and slightly moist on the inside.
What kind of bread is best for French toast?
A thick slice of bread is best, so it does not fall apart as it absorbs the liquid – the type of bread does not matter as much. Some bread that have been suggested in recipes are:
- Sourdough
- potato
- Challah
- Texas Toast
- French
- Brioche
How to serve French Toast Breakfast?
Place the French toast on a wooden platter surrounded by different toppings, fruit, nuts, and proteins such as links, sausage patties, and bacon. Let your guests/family decide what combination to come up with.
Tips:
- Be sure to choose bread that is thickly sliced so it does not fall apart during the dipping process.
- Be careful of the ratio of milk to eggs. There should not be more than 1 cup of milk to 3 large eggs. Otherwise, the French toast will not be crispy on the outside and moist on the inside.
- Do not use butter in the pan as it will brown the bread too quickly.
Variations:
Variations on toppings could include any of the following or a combination:
- Honey
- Fruit
- Whipped topping
- Cookie Butter
- Hazelnut Spread
- Nuts
- Flavored Syrups
- Powdered Sugar
Ingredients:
French toast:
- Eggs
- Milk
- Vanilla extract
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground nutmeg
- Pinch of salt
- White bread
- Oil
