Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15-20 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients:

8 Pieces chicken legs and/or thighs with skin on

2 Large eggs

3 C. Kentucky Kernel Seasoned Flour

4 C. Buttermilk

1 Tbsp. Baking powder

Oil for frying

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Chicken legs or thighs: It’s best to use chicken thighs or legs with this fried chicken recipe. They’ll remain juicy while the exterior of the chicken heats up and crisps. However, if you want a healthier alternative, you can also swap the thighs and legs for breasts and/or tenderloins. Chopping the breasts or tenderloins is a way to make a chicken nugget version of this recipe. You can also purchase and use a rotisserie chicken if you want to work with chicken that’s already cooked and ready to eat.

Baking powder: You can swap the baking powder for cream of tartar or baking soda, depending on what you have available in your pantry at home. The baking powder adds a light, airy, crisp to the chicken–so it’s highly advisable to use it if you have it available if you’re hunting for the best crispy chicken you can make!

Kentucky Kernel seasoning: You can use your own preferred seasonings when making this chicken. Add in seasonings one by one, depending on the flavor you’re going for with your chicken. The Kentucky Kernel seasoning is best if you’re a fan of KFC’s original and crispy chicken.

Buttermilk: Swap traditional buttermilk for buttermilk powder and water (depending on what you have available to use). You can also use a combination of milk and lemon juice or milk and vinegar to make your very own buttermilk at home.

How to Make It

Step 1. Mix the buttermilk and eggs together. Place the chicken into the mixture and allow it to marinate for 1 hour.

Step 3. Remove the chicken from the buttermilk mixture after an hour of marinating and roll the chicken in the flour mixture, coating completely. This will be the base of your crispy chicken.

Step 4. Heat a few inches of oil in a high-sided skillet over medium-high heat on the stove. Keep an eye on your oil to not burn it or cause it to begin smoking.

Step 5. Cook the chicken for 8-10 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should be at least 165 degrees. Having a meat thermometer on hand is always recommended, especially when cooking meats such as chicken or pork.

That’s it! Happy catching 🙂

Tips for Success

Use all ingredients as directed, including baking powder, for the best results. Swapping ingredients, such as the baking powder, might reduce the crispiness you’re seeking!

Storage & Reheating

You can store and save this fried chicken in your refrigerator for up to 4 days in airtight containers. It’s not recommended to freeze this chicken, as it may take away from the overall crispy texture it develops while cooking. So, it’s best to only prepare chicken you plan to eat immediately or throughout the week.

Reheat this crispy chicken by removing it from its Tupperware or container and allowing it to come close to room temperature. Reheat in a 300-degree oven for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through. For even better results, try reheating this chicken at 375-400 degrees Fahrenheit in your air fryer for 5 to 8 minutes to preserve its crispiness!

Serving Suggestions

When it comes to homemade man catching crispy fried chicken ideas, there’s no shortage of serving suggestions. You can serve this delicious fried chicken with Italian green beans, air fryer green beans, or even Parmesan crusted asparagus fries for a nutritious side! If you’re feeling something a bit more robust, try some homemade baked sweet potato fries or serving this crispy chicken alongside a cheesy asparagus casserole, instead.

Notes

Whether you’re a lover of KFC, Church’s Chicken, or another local fast food joint, this recipe will make you think twice. The crispiness this chicken delivers is yummy and is sure to impress even the pickiest of eaters. It’s absolutely kid-tested and approved, too!
