1 tbsp taco seasoning

12 egg roll wraps

Salt and pepper, to taste

½ onion, diced

½ cup cheddar cheese, grated

½ cup lettuce, shredded

½ cup tomatoes, diced

Cilantro, chopped

Cooking oil

Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Steak or chicken: This recipe is so versatile you can choose between either chicken or steak. Whether you prefer chicken breasts and thighs, or if you have a particular cut of steak you love for your cheesesteaks, it’s completely up to you!

Onion: To make this recipe a family friendly cheesesteak egg roll taco meal, you can omit the onion altogether (especially if it’s the texture that is off-putting to you or your household). You can also swap the traditionally chopped onion for onion powder to still enjoy its taste.

Taco seasoning: If you prefer making your own taco seasoning, try our taco meat seasoning recipe! You can also make homemade taco sauce for dipping, if you’d like! This ensures complete control over the ingredients you’re using without adding unnecessary preservatives to this dish. If you’re determined to make a healthy cheesesteak egg roll taco version, this is a great idea.

Cilantro: If you detest cilantro or you’re unable to find it, you can omit it entirely.

Chopped lettuce: Eliminate lettuce and/or tomatoes (and used canned tomatoes instead) if you’re not a fan of the crunch.

How to Make It

Step 1. Cook the steak or chicken in taco seasoning and set aside. This will require between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the type of chicken or steak you’re preparing. You can also opt for rotisserie chicken if you’re limited on time.

Step 2. At the center of each wrapper, place 2 tablespoons of meat. Season with salt and pepper, then top with a sprinkle of grated cheese and diced onion. Fold in sides and wrap tightly.

Step 3. If deep-frying in your pan, preheat oil to 350°F. Fry egg rolls for about 4-5 minutes or until turning golden brown. Remove to paper-towel-lined plate.

Step 4. If baking, preheat the oven to 425˚ degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a baking sheet lightly. Bake the rolls for 10-15 minutes or until browned, turning halfway through cooking time.

Step 5. Serve with lettuce, tomato, cilantro and salsa. You can swap the ingredients you serve these rolls with to suit your family’s preferences.

Tips for Success

If frying in a pan, use a grated cover to prevent the grease and oil from splashing. Baking is preferred for fewer calories and mess.

Make your own taco seasoning in bulk in advance to keep it on-hand for any of your favorite Southwest or taco-centric meals!

Storage & Reheating

You can store these taco cheesesteak egg rolls in airtight containers in your refrigerator for up to 4 days after you’re done cooking. It’s not recommended to store these in the freezer, as they may become soggy once they’re thawed. If you do want to freeze them, however, do so after rolling them in plastic wrap and securing them in Tupperware or a suitable container for up to 2 months.

You can reheat these cheesesteak egg roll tacos directly on a pan over low-medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes, or until they’re warm and cooked through. Reheating them in the microwave may change the texture a bit, but it’s possible for 2 to 3 minutes at a time.

Serving Suggestions

Serve these alongside a fresh green salad or make your own taco sauce for dipping. We love homemade taco sauce, as it allows us to skip out on preservatives and additives that often come in bottled sauces. You can also pair these cheesesteak egg roll tacos with delicious yellow rice–a perfect side!

Notes

These cheesesteak egg roll tacos can be simplified for kids and picky family members by removing items that cause texture or taste discomfort. A simplified version including onion powder instead of onions, is highly recommended if you’re searching for a dish that pleases everyone in the home!
