Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

You can use frozen strawberries if you have them in your freezer. Allow them to thaw completely before adding them into this recipe. This will allow them to combine well with the French toast once it’s ready to serve.

If you want to cut back on the calories in the brown and white sugar used in this simple strawberry cream cheese stuffed French toast, you can do so with a sugar alternative, such as monk fruit or stevia. Swerve also makes a brown sugar version with zero calories!

You can also swap full-fat cream cheese for a low or reduced-fat version if you’re watching your weight or want to enjoy a healthy strawberry cream cheese stuffed French toast version of this recipe.

If you’re searching for a zero-calorie (and reduced glucose spike) honey, consider using an Allulose-based honey. You can find plenty of honey alternatives with zero sugar, based on your family’s dietary needs or potential restrictions.

How to Make It

Step 1: Make the filling by blending all ingredients together in a blender or hand mixer until creamy smooth. A blender is much faster, but hand-mixing is doable for this recipe. Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

Step 2: Heat a nonstick skillet pan over medium-low heat.

Step 3: Mix eggs, milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar & honey together to make the custard. Mix well until the ingredients are fully combined! Mixing well is essential to ensure all ingredients are distributed evenly throughout the custard. Set aside.

Step 4: Take one piece of Texas Toast and lay flat on a cutting board. With a rolling pin, flatten each piece of bread to ½ inch thick. Your slices should be fairly thin. Spread 2 tablespoons of cream cheese mixture over half of one side of bread. Do not spread all over. Just one half.

Step 5: From the cream cheese half, roll the bread over as shown in the photo (the cream cheese mixture should seal it closed) and repeat with remaining bread. Lay folded side down.

Step 6: Next, add butter to the pan. Dip each piece into the custard (egg/milk mixture) and immediately fry until golden brown on all sides, turning carefully every 1-2 minutes. They should be browned in about 4-5 mins. Do not overcrowd your skillet.

Step 7: Your simple strawberry cream cheese stuffed French toast meal is done when the surface of the roll-ups is crispy brown. Sprinkle with powdered sugar, cinnamon, or your favorite topping and add warm maple syrup or honey.

Tips for Success

For more homemade strawberry cream cheese stuffed French toast ideas, consider swapping the strawberries for blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries, depending on which type of berry is in seasonally near you.

Use Texas toast, sourdough, or your favorite bread to bring this dish to life. You’re not limited to Texas toast, although it is a classic when making any form of French toast.

Storage and Reheating

You can store cooked French toast in an airtight container for 3 to 4 days. Keep in mind that your French toast may be soggy if you reheat in the microwave or on the stove. To reheat on the stove, do so at a medium heat for 3 to 8 minutes. You can also microwave your leftovers for 1 to 2 minutes, per serving, depending on the power of your microwave.

It’s not recommended to freeze this recipe with the added custard and strawberries, as your toast is likely to come out soggy once it is thawed.

Serving Suggestions

This French toast recipe is extremely filling and decadent. We recommend serving it alongside lighter sides, such as our fruit salad to die for or our fruit salsa with baked cinnamon chips!

Choose a bread that works well with an egg wash, such as thicker homemade Texas toast, Cheesecake Factory brown bread, or Mexican Sweet Bread. You can also try our homemade Amish sweet bread!

This recipe is perfect for a Saturday brunch with the family or when you’re at home on vacation with the kids! Enjoy this recipe year-round.
