How many layers of noodles in a lasagna?

There are 3 layers of noodles in this dish.

What is the correct layering for lasagna?

The correct layering for this dish is:

  • Meat sauce
  • Noodles
  • Cheese mixture

Repeat layers two more times except the final layer ending with a remaining 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese instead of the cheese mixture.

Do you boil lasagna noodles before layer?

Yes, the lasagna noodles need to be boiled before baking unless using oven ready noodles.

Should I cover lasagna when I bake it?

When first baking the lasagna, you should cover it with foil. It should be baked for 30 minutes with foil, then remove the cover for the last five minutes of baking to allow the cheese to get brown and bubbly.

How to serve Three Cheese Beef Lasagna?

Allow the lasagna to set for at least 10 minutes prior to serving. Some possible side dishes to serve alongside could be a lettuce salad and breadsticks or crusty garlic bread.

Tips:

If you like a softer lasagna, omit the final 5 minutes of baking with the foil removed. This is what crisps the noodles and top layer of cheese.

Let the lasagna set at least 10 minutes before serving to firm up. This allows it to slice much easier.

Variations:

  • Vegetarian lasagna – replace the ground beef with tofu, carrots, peppers, zucchini, or any combination of your favorite vegetables
  • Meat lovers – add sausage and pepperoni along with the ground beef
  • Love meat and vegetables – add carrots and green peppers to the meat mixture
  • Like extra spice – add red pepper flakes to the meat sauce

Can I make ahead Three Cheese Beef Lasagna?

This recipe is great for making ahead and storing either before or after baking. If making it to take to a friend, leave off the final topping of cheese, tightly cover it with plastic wrap, make sure it is in an airtight, freezer-safe container, date it, and instruct the friend, (or if for yourself) that it can be frozen up to 3 months.

If not freezing, just make it ahead as the recipe states and store it in the refrigerator with the foil cover. Set out approximately 20 minutes prior to baking to bring the dish to room temperature before placing it in the preheated oven. Bake as directed.
