Hamburger Steak vs. Salisbury steak
While Salisbury steak and hamburger steak are similar, they aren’t the same. As a matter of fact, Salisbury steak is made with other ingredients to help it taste different, like breadcrumbs and ketchup. But hamburger steak is made with seasoned hamburger, and that is it.
Simple Salisbury Steak Tips
Here are a few tips to help you make the perfect Simple Salisbury Steak:
- Be sure to finely chop the onion and mushrooms. This will help them cook evenly and blend into the sauce.
- If you don’t have time to make your own gravy, you can use a store-bought version. Just be sure to read the labels and choose one that is low in sodium.
- I like to serve my Salisbury steak over mashed potatoes, but you could also serve it over rice or noodles.
- To get that classic “steakhouse” flavor, add a little Worcestershire sauce to the gravy.
- Leftovers are just as good reheated. So if you have any Salisbury steak leftover, be sure to save it for another meal!

There are endless ways to enjoy Salisbury steak. Here are a few of my favorite variations:
- Swiss Cheese Salisbury Steak – Top your steak with a slice of Swiss cheese for a delicious twist.
- Mushroom Gravy Salisbury Steak – Make a gravy using mushrooms instead of onions for a unique flavor.
- Onion Ring Salisbury Steak – For a fun and easy twist, top your steak with crispy onion rings.
- Barbecue Sauce Salisbury Steak – Give your steak a sweet and smoky flavor by adding barbecue sauce to the gravy.
- Cajun Salisbury Steak – Add some spice to your steak by seasoning it with Cajun spices like paprika, cayenne pepper, and garlic powder.

We prefer lean ground beef, but you can use beef with a higher fat content if you’d rather. You can also swap it for ground turkey, ground pork, or ground chicken.
