Three Layer Apple Spice Cake Recipe

It’s almost fall and that means pumpkin and apple season. While I love pumpkin and make a lot of pumpkin desserts, I love apple too. Apple Spice Cake is a great way to bring the sweet taste of apple and cinnamon to the dessert table. Not only is this a great tasting dessert, but it is also surprisingly easy to make. You are going to love making this layer cake recipe.

How Long Does Moist Apple Cake Last

In my house, this cake doesn’t last more than a day, but that is because it is eaten almost as fast as I can make it. In general, this moist apple cake will last for about 3 to 4 days when stored properly. If you have extra cinnamon frosting, you can store it in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

How to Store Spice Cake

Apple Spice Cake never lasts very long in my house. It is a favorite and it tends to disappear very fast. It is important when you store spice cake that you keep it covered from the air. This will make the cake taste stale. Using an airtight container or a cake stand with a cover is a great way to keep it fresh. The cake can be stored on the counter. If you choose to store the cake in the refrigerator, while it might last an extra few days, it will taste drier than it does on the counter.

What is in Cinnamon Frosting

The frosting that goes with this apple spice cake is a cinnamon buttercream icing that is whipped to be fluffy and delicious. This cinnamon frosting goes between each layer of cake as well as over the top and sides of the cake.

How to Frost a Layer Cake Recipe

Whenever you make a layer cake, you want to put frosting between each layer of the cake. The frosting between the layers makes the cake taste lighter and less dense. As you assemble to cake, you will add a layer of the icing between the first and second layer. Smooth it out and add the next layer. After adding the top layer of the cake, then you will add cinnamon frosting across the top and sides of the cake. Spread it around in an even layer. Once the cake is frosted, you can enjoy a slice of Three Layer Apple Spice Cake.

Three Layer Apple Spice Cake Recipe

Ingredients in Apple and Cinnamon Cake

  • unsalted butter
  • sugar
  • brown sugar
  • vegetable oil
  • vanilla
  • eggs
  • flour
  • baking powder
  • salt
  • ground cinnamon
  • allspice
  • apple cider
  • whole milk
  • powdered sugar
  • heavy whipping cream

Other Things You Will Need

  • 1 large piping bag with large round tip
  • 8 in round cake pans
  • Baking spray
  • Electric mixer
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rubber spatula
  • Medium bowl
  • Whisk
  • Cooling rack
  • Cake Leveling tool

How to Make Moist Apple Cake

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Prep the round cake pans with baking spray,
Add the butter, both sugars, oil, and vanilla to a large mixing bowl on medium high speed. Mixing together for about 4-5 minutes. (Or until light, fluffy and combined.)
Add the eggs one at a time. Mix until mostly combined after each addition. Using a rubber spatula scrape down the sides of the bowl to make sure all ingredients are well blended.
Add flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and allspice to a bowl. Whisk together to combine.
Reduce the mixer speed down to its lowest speed. Slowly add the dry ingredients to batter.
Pour in the apple cider and the milk .Mix on low speed until the batter is just combined.
Carefully divide batter into the three cake pans making sure they are even.
Bake at 350 degrees for 22-25 minutes. (Or until a toothpick inserted into the centers comes out clean.)
Allow to cool in the pan for 10 minutes.
Flip the pans one at a time to remove the cake from the pans onto cooling racks. Allow cake layers to come to room temperature.
Using a cake leveling tool shave off the top of the top of each cake.

Frosting Directions

Using a standing mixer combine the butter, powdered sugar, heavy whipping cream, vanilla, and cinnamon. Mix on medium speed until combined and smooth. Transfer the bottom layer to a cake stand.

Frost each layer and gently stack them on top of each other.

Lightly frost the sides of the cake.

Drizzle caramel sauce on the edge of the top and sides of the cake.

Insert the frosting tip into the pastry bag.

Scoop the remaining frosting into frosting bag. Make large dollops of frosting on the edges around the cake.

Place thinly sliced apple pieces on the frosting dollops.
